Legendary Reggae Producer Coxsone Dodd Dies
05/05/2004

It is with the deepest regret that we bring news of the sudden death of one of reggae music's most respected figures.

Sir Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd died yesterday (Tuesday 4th May) in his homeland of Jamaica. It is reported that the 72-year-old pioneer and founder of Studio One died from heart complications.

The news will come as a great shock to many as he had no apparent history of health problems and had appeared in public as recently as last Friday (30th April) at a ceremony that saw Brentford Road renamed as Studio One Boulevard. The ceremony had been organised specially to pay tribute to Mr. Dodd's accomplishments.

Yesterday, Aloun N'dombet Assamba, Minister of Industry and Tourism with responsibility for Entertainment, joined with the entire music fraternity of Jamaica in grieving at the passing of the man who has been described as a 'pioneering giant' of Jamaica's music industry.

"'Sir Coxsone' as he was known to all, was indeed the father of popular entertainment in Jamaica. For decades, the development of modern Jamaican music and the unearthing of new talent rested on his shoulders as he did his utmost to nurture an industry that has now become a powerful force internationally," the Minister said.

"We can be grateful that Clement Dodd lived to see Brentford Road recently renamed Studio One Boulevard as a lasting tribute to his outstanding contribution to the nation."

Mr. Dodd had been involved with music since his stint as a migrant labourer, when he used to import records to be played in his sound system. He has produced for such artists as Bob Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Bob Andy, Peter Tosh, Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis and many more. He earned the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 1991 and in 2002 - on the 40th anniversary of Jamaican Independence - was given a special award for his contribution to Jamaican music.

He is survived through his wife and six children. Our thoughts go out to them and all of his friends and extended family at this very sad time.

If you would like to pay tribute to Coxsone Dodd, please email us at info@trojanrecords.com and we will publish them on our tribute page.
